Seeing

I thought seeing you was best,
watching as the light would change,
waiting for the night to gather us.

But dreaming holds strange vision too,
that flickers through reluctant shadows,
touching on all wanting spirits there.

Those shadows, spirits, dreams, reveal anew
and serve as well as sense
to picture you.

  1. "shadows, spirits, dreams" serve as well, and often are so much more accessible...hit to the heart with this one, Steve--every word in its place, and not a one that doesn't drive the poem. Last line of that middle stanza--just perfect, and reading the whole piece is like opening a small jeweled box that holds something unique and hard to find.

  2. Sometimes dreams are the only way left to picture someone. Love that last stanza.

  3. Yes, sometimes dreams are the preferred path to a love...a dream, rather than the harshness of reality which can often blur...then tuck away the vision in a little gold and velvet treasure chest...a little treasure of a poem, to call upon later, remember, and be part of that love. The dream is just as real. Very nice!

  4. tight little piece...i will say that i will take flesh over dream any day and dream can sometimes twist the flesh so that it will never satisfy...but i think that love and dreams often do go hand in hand...

  5. I like how tight and clear your words are...dreams and shadows can be just as revealing, but for me coming to grips with reality is the best ~

  8. Seeing through our heart, our mind, our dreams sometimes feels stronger and somehow deeper, than seeing with our eyes. Wonderful capture, Steve. So much said so well in just a few lines.
